Spotlight: Der Vampyr
Opening Wednesday, October 7th, Chicago City Opera’s Der Vampyr is a musically decadent homage to 1920s Universal Monster movies. Director SarahAnn Sutter brings to the stage sensibilities and characterizations that resonate with these early films' storytelling panache. The source material is the progenitor of popular vampire fiction, predating Dracula by seventy years. There's a lot to love about this piece from a purely historical standpoint - it's fascinating seeing how much (and how little) our vampire mythology has changed over the centuries. Conductor Alexis Enyart leads a praiseworthy ensemble cast of exceptional singers through this lavish, consonant, deeply German score. You're in for a treat - many of the arias throughout the show will leave you captivated.
This piece is sung in German with English supertitles, but all the scenes are presented in English.
Pay attention when getting your tickets! Der Vampyr will be presented at different venues for each performance - make sure you show up at the right place at the right time. All three venues are fully accessible.
You’ll like this show if:
- You have a soft spot for old monster movies and horror
- You appreciate lush, hummable, German music
- You're in the mood for some serious vocal fireworks
- You've waited long enough for spooky season

Chicago City Opera (CCO) presents the Chicago premiere of the gothic horror opera Der Vampyr. First performed in 1828, Marschner’s Der Vampyr is a thrilling predecessor to the vampire stories that have become a staple of popular culture - predating Bram Stoker’s Dracula by half a century. With mysterious characters, dramatic twists, and a richly atmospheric score, Der Vampyr captures the romance, suspense, and intrigue of the gothic tradition.
